Nausea and Vomiting
- December 28, 2022
Nausea and vomiting are some of the major symptoms of a huge number of diseases that can make you feel miserable. Although both are overlapping conditions, they are quite distinct from each other; nausea is a feeling of about to throw up or vomit, while vomiting is the involuntary throwing up of stomach contents via the mouth as a result of diaphragmatic and abdominal muscles contraction. Sometimes our brain gets triggered by certain things and it shows up as nausea or throwing up. Overall, nausea and vomiting lead to a relatively unpleasant experience and impact quantity and quality of life of those particular individuals who have serious illnesses. Obviously, the definitive treatment depends upon finding out the root cause. General causes of nausea and vomiting are chemotherapy, pregnancy, food poisoning, gastrointestinal disorders, brain malfunctioning, emotional distress, anxiety, and motion sickness. Nausea and/or vomiting are the common adverse reactions of certain medicines. The range of available antiemetic drugs can make it hard to find out the optimum treatment approach. Marijuana has been in use for decades to stop the symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Studies have shown its potential anti-emetic effect. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165951/)
In a review on Cannabis or marijuana, researchers stated that marijuana has significant potential and a promising role in limiting, as well as preventing, nausea and vomiting from a variety of causes. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3883513/)
Similarly, a recent study has demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing nausea within one hour of its consumption in about 96% of the study population. (https://journals.lww.com/jcge/Abstract/2022/04000/The_Effectiveness_of_Common_Cannabis_Products_for.8.aspx)
If conventional medications are unsuccessful, perhaps marijuana may be of help. It may be useful as an alternative therapy to anti-vomiting drugs or for the resistant cases.
